Notepad ++ has been tested in the past and has been found to work fairly well with Wine. Most Mac users are familiar with Wine, the Windows emulator that runs on top of macOS and allows Mac owners to run (some) Windows programs. Well, there is a way to achieve that goal. None of these alternatives may work for you as you just need Notepad ++. It’s free and provides access to a range of plugins and downloads created and maintained by a team of volunteer developers. It calls itself, whatever that means, a “mature programmer’s text editor.” Despite this, Java app works over OS, supports macros, languages, plugins, folding, code, word wrap, clipboard history, tags and much more.

(Upgrading from BBEdit 11 costs $ 29.99, or $ 39.99 to upgrade from previous versions.) TextWrangler is almost similar to Notepad ++ in that it works well with code, emphasizes syntax, can elaborate languages, works seamlessly with files, plain text, Unicode and also has a spell checker. It’s essentially the free version of BBEdit that I’ll be discussing next.

TextWrangler is no longer developed, but it is so good that people still recommend using it.
